Sing with your head up and your eyes closed...

Four reasons I wish my life was a musical:

1. People wouldn’t stare at me when I sing out loud when I’m shopping in public. They would gather around me magically knowing the words and sing with me in harmony. We would dance around automatically knowing all the steps and they would all pick me up and hold me upwards at a camera shot looking down on us for the finale. Trust me, it would be freaking awesome.

2. I would never sing off key unless it was written into the song, at which point it would serve the story line. I would sing perfectly and my improv skills would be pretty sweet, which means I wouldn’t start singing really stupid things because I can’t think of words that rhyme with each other.

3. Singing is romantic. If I started singing romantically to Chris now, he’d probably look at me like I’m nuts and then say something to that effect. But if my life was a musical, we’d sing songs and dance together before a fade to black that leaves us in a steamy kiss. That works for both of us.

4. Because I would never be bored! I could sing my way through work every day with a definite plot progression-- enter conflict (which I currently have), enter resolution (which doesn’t come into the picture as often as I’d like). Also, I wouldn’t be annoying anyone with my songs because they’d come in and sing along. It would be great.

Can you tell I really like to sing? It’s pretty much one of my favorite things to do, but I get really nervous when I sing around people. Then I forget the words, and I’m traumatized. My anxiety is terrible. I wish I could feel more self confident. I would love to sing in public without sweating and freaking out and forgetting the words. But if my life were a musical, I wouldn’t have to worry about anxiety, and I could sing all I wanted all of the time.

  1. You know, I wanted to be able to sing more, and so I decided whenever an opportunity came to me to sing, I would. Now I'm kind of like a funeral singer, like a wedding singer. I've sang at a handful of funerals, even a person from another ward called me to sing at a funeral. And I also get asked to sing in musical numbers with others. If I had to do it solo, I would probably be even more nervous, but I would do it anyway.

  2. I might sing at functions if I wasn't so afraid I'd mess up. Remember Dad's funeral? I totally thought I had that song, and my mind went completely blank as soon as I became comfortable singing in front of everyone. Well, out here no one even knows I sing. I briefly went to a voice teacher (who was pretty intent on me singing opera... uh, what?), and she suggested I that I sing a lot of karaoke. Well, that's fine, but hell-o, I don't have my sisters here to go with me!! That would just be weird to show up at some bar with karaoke by myself and start singing...

  3. Yeah, I've sung at karaoke a couple of times. People were like, "Oh, you sing so good!" It's a real confidence booster, but it's scarier I think, but most people are drunk and everything sounds good.

  4. so true, so true. if our lives were musicals, they would be a lot more enjoyable. although, i don't sing....at least not well. karaoke is so fun. we did that quite a bit in japan and it helped me feel less nervous about singing. we had to sing songs to the little japanese kiddies and i was really self concious about my voice. but i'd love to hear you sing sometime!

  5. Oh my gosh, you are so like your mother! I have had these exact same thoughts! I love to sing but I truly don't have a chance in front of people. You should hear me in the car tho....oh but you have when you were little! before you became a person!

  6. Yeah right, Mom. I was always a person. And Michael remembers it well enough. "Mom, do you know ALL the songs that come on the radio?"

  7. I know you were always a person but I didn't always treat you like one, well that didn't come out right did it. I mean I wasn't afraid to sing out with you in the car!!!
